The Staff

ISL’s teaching staff is culturally diverse and, whilst all being qualified in their native country to teach their specialist curriculum areas, teachers also follow specific IBO workshops and related conferences to ensure that the pedagogical philosophy and quality of the IBO are maintained. Continued professional development is a requirement for all staff members.

Director
Donna Philip, British/French

Raised in Zimbabwe, Kenya and Wales. Studies in English Literature (her teaching subject) and French completed with an MBA in Educational Management. 30 years in international education and management. Donna is also a keen open water swimmer, hiker, cross-country skier and kitchen gardener. She is the current President of ELSA France.

 

School Secretary
Marie-Pierre Chuong, French

Secretarial and English studies in Lyon. Departmental secretary in several small and medium size companies in the Lyon area and, prior to her move to ISL, in a music school. Marie-Pierre is an active classical dancer and pilates practitioner

 

 

Caretaker
David Paridoso, French/Italian

This is David’s third year at ISL where he is using his background in maintenance and business to keep the school clean, tidy and in good repair. Of Italian origin, David speaks French, Italian and some English, which is rapidly improving. He is an enthusiastic lover of cars and all types of  music and is an active DJ in his spare time.

 

Premises assistant
Michel Espejo, French

Michel is starting his second year in the ISL team where his technical knowledge and expertise come in useful on a daily basis. He is a keen gardener and do-it-yourself expert.

 

 

Curriculum Coordinator & Science Teacher
Mike Ford, British

MA Chemistry Oxford University.  PGCE Science Bath University. Previous positions as teacher and head of department at schools in the UK, France and Switzerland. IB deputy chief examiner and workshop leader for chemistry, as well as assistant examiner for Theory of Knowledge, Mike  has  also published  chemistry text books used in schools worldwide

 

Middle Years Coordinator & Geography/Science Teacher
Ros Ford, British

MA Geography Cambridge University, PGCE Institute of Education, London. Ros has taught Geography and Sciences in schools in the UK, France and Switzerland and has extensive experience with the IBO’s Middle Years Programme (MYP) – France is her favourite place though!

 

 

Primary Coordinator & Primary school teacher (Early Years and and Grade 3)
Alison Pattinson, British

B.Ed in Primary Education, M.A. in Education (Management), N.P.Q.H. from National College for School Leaders plus 16 years teaching experience in the UK and France. Previous positions have included Deputy Head and Primary Consultant. She enjoys reading, cooking and when more energetic, yoga!

 

Early Years teacher (Pre-kindergarten) and Music teacher Grades 1-5
Gilleon Shand , British

Gilleon has just joined ISL’s brand new Early Childhood Unit after teaching experience in  Scotland and Germany. Her detailed profile will be posted very soon.

 

Early Years teacher (kindergarten)
Kate Murdoch , Canadian/British

BA in  French and geography; B Ed with French Immersion  in the primary setting specialization. Kate has just joined the Early Years Unit after teaching experience in her native Canada and France.  Kate enjoys going to the cinema, cooking (food in general!), and travelling. Recent trips include Croatia and Cuba and she hopes to get out to explore many new places in the coming year!

Helen Brian, British

Helen, who joined ISL last year from her native Scotland, has a BEd Honours Degree in Primary Education from the  University of Aberdeen along with a certificate in Food Hygiene. She is a keen sportswoman and keeps fit with running, gym and various other sports. When not out jogging she enjoys exploring Lyon and France in general.

Kelsey Corcoran, Canadian

From the west coast of Canada. Studies in Elementary education, English literature and Linguistics. Previous positions as teacher in Canada, Sweden and Japan. Kelsey is a sports enthusiast involved in biking and climbing and is also passionate about food and photography.

 

 

Primary School Teacher (Grade 3)
Janet Godley, British

Janet has a B.Ed Honours Degree from Bishop Grosseteste College, Lincoln (Nottingham University) and taught for many years in Lincolnshire schools. In her last post she was school history co-ordinator and developed and introduced the dance component of the P.E. curriculum. Janet enjoys pilates and going to the gym when her busy expat life allows her to.

Eric Clark, British (photo to come)

Eric is very excited about having joined ISL this year.  He graduated with a B.Ed (primary) from the University of Aberdeen and has taught in schools in both his native Scotland and Germany.   He enjoys participating in any type of sport but especially enjoys running and cycling.

Barbara Williams, British

Studies in Primary education and English and American studies in Wales and England. Barbara has taught at different schools in the UK, including several years on the Scottish Isle of Skye. She has a particular interest in educational research and teaching English and Scottish ceilidh. She is also an outdoor activities and nature enthusiast.

 

Art teacher
Simon Beaudouin, French

Studies in Art and Design and Education in Great Britain where he worked for several years before transferring to Shanghai. Simon is now back on home ground but happy to be continuing in a thriving international school community.

 

 

Biology / ICT Teacher
Steve Harton, Canadian

Steve is a French Canadian who has been living in Europe since 1999. He has been teaching for 18 years at all levels, working with different educational programmes in several different countries. He specialises in biology, but is also currently teaching ICT at ISL and has set up his own biology teaching website (http://hartonlinebio.weebly.com/).

English/ESOL Teacher
Nora Palmieri Trout, American

M.A.’s in Education and in French Language and Literature. 18 years in the U.S. teaching teachers and students (K-12) in a reading and discussion programme. Nora has also helped test and develop classroom resources, run summer reading camps and taught in Brazil and the U.S. She and her family are avid travelers who moved to Lyon “for the experience”.

Sylvie Bonci, French

Studies in French literature at the University of Grenoble; PGCE Jordanhill in Glasgow, Sylvie worked for 8 years in Scotland at the International School of Aberdeen. Teaches French at ISL but also ESOL in the Summer School Programme and other schools in the area.

Sandra Desporte, French

Sandra has just joined ISL from Barcelona where she has been teaching for several years. Her detailed profile will be posted very soon.

 

French Teacher
Béatrice Gillet, French

French MBA (EDHEC). Worked 12 years for a large French industrial company followed by ten years in the Netherlands where she took a teaching degree in French as a foreign language. Worked in Amsterdam International Community School and then ISL, having completed studies with a Masters 1, also in French as a foreign language.

Isabelle Matrat, French

Studied language and literature in St Etienne before moving to London as a language assistant and staying on to complete a PGCE at the Institute of Education. She then taught French in London for 8 years and in Houston, Texas for 2 years with various age groups.  She enjoys travelling, cooking, painting and is a keen amateur photographer.

 

History teacher
Martin Porter, British

MA European Studies, Harvard University; Dr. Phil in Modern History, Oxford University. Previous positions as teacher and researcher in England (Oxford), Italy (Florence) and Denmark (Copenhagen). Mr. Porter is a keen digital film-maker, and has worked as a consultant to British and Danish television channels. He is also a published historical author.

 

Mathematics and ICT teacher
Catherine Krylova, Russian

Studies of Mathematics at Moscow State Pedagogical Institute. Previous positions in IB schools in Moscow, Hong-Kong (UWC Lee Po Chung) and Vienna. Ms. Krylova also teaches Computer Science, and has experience with running large computer networks. She is a certified English/Russian translator and interpreter.

 

Music teacher (secondary)
Hannah James Carlisle, American

A native of San Francisco, Hannah holds a Master’s degree in musicology. She has taught flute, piano and music theory for over ten years, and is continuing her own studies in classical flute. As well as speaking English and French, she is currently learning toddler talk from her 5-year-old son.

 

 

Physical Education teacher

ylvie Vitelli, French

Sylvie is from Paris originally but studies in tourism led her to New York where she worked at the French Consulate and at the Lycée Français. After her return to France where she qualified in Sports and Education, she joined ISL at its opening in 2004. She is a certified lifeguard and a competitive multi-sport athlete who participates in top level marathons and triathlons.

 

Science and maths teacher
Kati Goor, Australian/Hungarian

Educated and trained in Australia (Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronics; DipEd; Montessori Diploma), Kati is extremely flexible and teaches a mix of science, maths and ICT at different levels in the secondary school. She is a keen traveller and has visited different parts of Europe, Mexico, the US, Canada and Thailand as well as enjoying bush walks and hiking in her everyday life.

Katharina Wezel, German

This is Katharina’s second year at ISL where she is enjoying developing the library and media centre. She is a qualified and experienced primary school teacher in her native Germany and published author of children’s language text books.
